Guarani - the result of a cross (Lawton x (Darrow x Brazos)) x (Shafler Tree x Brazos), made at the University of Arkansas, United States, under number 799-8. The seeds were selected by Embrapa Clima Temperado, in Pelotas, Brazil (1988).
Canes are erect and thorny. Guarani flowers at the end of August and throughout September or, in some years, from September to the beginning of October (in South hemisphere). The fruits have a sweet-sour taste, with a predominance of acid. The soluble solids content ranges from 8 to 10 Brix. It is inferior to Tupy in color, taste and fruit size. Guarani ripens early and is harvested in November (in South hemisphere).
The average production is 3.6 kg per plant. Berries are medium-sized (avg. 5 to 6 g), have uniform black color, firm consistency, small seeds, resistant skin and active aroma.
Guarani variety fruits are rich in chromium and copper content.
Guarani is recommended for fresh consumption and industrialization.
