Brzezina is thornless erect blackberry cultivar from Experimental Station Of The Institute Of Horticulture, Brzezna, Poland. This is the most early-ripening variety from all cultivars of Institute. Brzezina is very vigorous plant without substitution canes. Stems are thick and strong, up to 3,5 m in length and up to 25 mm in basal diameter. New canes are bright green in color, but soon become hardwood. Strongly recommended to lay the canes on the trellis timely for prevent canes damage. Laterals usually are short. First ripen berries appear at the beginning of July. The harvest season continues up to three weeks. Fruits of Brzezina are medium-large in size, saturated glossy black in color, firm and have cylindrical shape. Taste is sweet with good flavor. Average berry weight is about 4 g. Yield is medium, about 2 kg from plant. Fruit quality is good, transportability is high. Brzezina has superb winter hardiness up to minus 30 C. In south region there is no necessity to use winter shelters. But it is recommended to use light covers like nonwoven materials.
