Von

Von is a floricane-fruiting blackberry developed by North Carolina State University, United States. Blackberry variety Von is a productive plant with high yield, long harvest season, excellent postharvest attributes, and small seed size. Furthermore, it is the first thornless blackberry released from the North Carolina State University. Von cultivar is named in honor of Mr. Von Harvey Underwood, who worked in the fruit breeding programs at North Carolina State University for over 44 years.
Blackberry Von offer growers a new cultivar for fruit production in the late harvest season in the south regions.
Von variety is late-ripening blackberry. Von produces fruit in the late season, with average date of harvest commencing in the last week of June, peaking in the second week of July and ending the first week of August (in south regions). Although harvest season varies a few days each year. Canes of Von blackberry are thornless and erect, very flexible. Bushes requires full sun placement. Fresh fruit are attractive with a glossy black finish and medium size of 6-7 g. Seeds are very small. Average yield is about 12 kg from each plant. In addition to high yields of good quality fruit, Von has a number of other advantages in comparison to other commercially available blackberry cultivar. Winter-hardiness and disease-resistanse is similar to Navaho.
Post harvest evaluations for fruit indicate that Von’s berries perform well after 7 days of storage.
