Blackberry variety Polar is thornless erect floricane-fruiting plant from Experimental Station Of The Institute Of Horticulture, Brzezna, Poland.
Polar is very vigorous plant, has from 2 to 10 root stems. Stems are thick and strong, up to 3 m in length. New canes are bright green in color, but soon become hardwood. Strongly recommended to lay the canes on the trellis timely for prevent canes damage. Laterals usually are short.
Flowers are big, have white color with pink shade. Fruits of Polar are large in size, saturated glossy black in color and have oval shape. First ripen berries appear at the end of July. Average berry weight is about 10 g. Some berries achieves 20 g in weight. Yield is medium, about 6 kg from plant. Fruit quality is good, transportability is high. Taste and flavor is little similar to Triple Crown. Firmness is moderate, transportability is low.
Polar has very good winter hardiness up to minus 30 C. In south region there is no necessity to use winter shelters. But it is recommended to use light covers like nonwoven materials.
