Loganberry, originated from California, US, came on the market as a thornless mutation of the old thorny Loganberry (cross between raspberry and a lot of blackberry varieties) in the 1930s.
These plants are fully thornless. Bushes usually produce from eight to ten stems up to 3m in length and not more than 20 mm in basal. The canes are not as upright as its raspberry parent and tend to creep like its blackberry parent, so Logan requires trellis. Old canes die after their second year and should be cut away. The Loganberry fruits are earlier than its blackberry parent. Berries are produced for about two months, generally from mid-June until mid-August. Blooms from the end of April to mid-May. The plants are generally harvested when they are a deep purple color, rather than red. Each bush can produce from 3 to 5 kg of fruit a year. Berries have unique wild berries aroma, but the taste is sour. Average berry weight is 8 g.
